Blend details:
100% Pinot Noir

Varietal details:
The name Pinot Noir is derived from the French words for pine and black because the grape variety has tightly clustered, pinecone—shaped bunches of fruit.  It is grown around the world, mostly in cooler climates, but is chiefly associated with Burgundy, France. Pinot noir is difficult to cultivate due to the tightly packed grape bunches which makes it very susceptible to rot and requires diligent canopy management. Thin skins and low levels of phenolic compounds lead to mostly lightly coloured, medium-bodied and low-tannin wines. When young, wines made from Pinot noir tend to have red fruit aromas of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. As the wine ages, more vegetal and "barnyard" aromas develop adding complexity.

Origin / terroir:
All the fruit was grown on our own vineyard in the Teign Valley, South Devon on vines planted in 2007.  The vineyard is planted on south facing slopes at an altitude of 75-100 metres above sea level.  The soil is silt loam with granite and siltstone aggregates. The vines are planted at a planting density of 3500 vines/ha.

Winemaking:
Picked in October 2023, after 12 hours skin contact this wine was then fermented in stainless steel. Bottled in May 2024 with 4gl of residual sugar.

2023 Harvest:
2023 got off to a fantastic start with perfect flowering conditions leading to a perfect fruit set and large yields. The harvest itself however was one with very mixed weather conditions with torrential long lasting periods of rain causing lower sugar levels than normal as well as lower acidity at picking, but despite the challenging weather conditions which created high disease risk that had to be carefully managed, phenolic ripeness was outstanding.
